Greece: Golden Dawn party leader and lawmaker arrested, police say

Athens (CNN) -- The leader of Greece's extreme right wing Golden Dawn party and a party lawmaker have been arrested on charges of forming a criminal gang, Athens police said Saturday.

The arrests of the leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, and lawmaker, Elias Kassidiaris, are part of a crackdown following a controversial stabbing death. CNN

Not since the end of Greece's military dictatorship in 1974 have MPs been arrested. It is an extraordinary clampdown by a government long accused of taking a soft touch towards Golden Dawn.

Some 154 racist attacks were recorded here last year and 104 so far this year - most attributed to Golden Dawn members. Two immigrants have been killed, again blamed on the party. Greek police arrested the leader, two lawmakers and party members from the far-right Golden Dawn party on Saturday, and charged one member with being an accomplice to the killing of an anti-fascist rapper, a police official said.

Police said party leader Nikolaos Mihaloliakos, spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris, two other lawmakers and 10 members had been arrested on charges of founding a criminal organization. They are due to appear in court this weekend to be formally charged. Reuters

Greek police have arrested the leader of the Greek far-right Golden Dawn party on charges of forming "a criminal organisation", as well as 15 other members of his party, police say.

Nikos Mihaloliakos, the party's secretary-general, was arrested along with Ilias Kassidiaris, the party's spokesperson, two other members of parliament and other party members, police said on Saturday.

Greek far-right leader arrested, warrants for more

Greek police say the leader of the extreme right Golden Dawn party, Nikos Mihaloliakos, has been arrested on charges of forming a criminal organization.

Warrants for the arrest of another five Golden Dawn parliament deputies have been issued. The police counterterrorism unit is looking for the deputies. More warrants are expected.
